Al Russell

Al Russell is a lifelong resident of Branford, a product of the Branford schools, 1958 high school graduate, a six year veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a community leader. Al has a deep love for his community and the schools that provided him with an education. A giving man, Al has sought to give back to the community through his efforts to educate in a variety of ways.
Al Russell is a remarkable man who has devoted countless hours to providing learning experiences for Branford's citizens. His passions are teaching, local history and theology. Al has shared his vast knowledge and love of Branford's history through special programs in the schools, conducting walking tours of historical Branford sites, including the Center Cemetery and the area of the Green and its churches. He has given presentations on Branford's Native Americans, Branford's relationship with Yale, Branford's one room school houses and public school education in our town. Al is a regular visitor to the Branford Hills Health Care Center where he has given talks about Branford's history and has visited individual patients to read to them about Branford's history and to provide person to person human contact to brighten their day. These are his gifts to the town he loves.
Al has a history of long and distinguished service to the public schools as a substitute teacher for twelve years and still counting and his volunteer work as a mentor in the schools. In addition, Al has been active in supporting youth athletics, including coaching youth spots and filming Branford Field Hockey games.
Al's presentations to Branford school children are known for their excellence. He has presented lessons on specific decades in American history, using artifacts to bring these eras to life for children. He has conducted classes about the American monetary system, the American Flag and early 1900 women's fashions, showing his collection of dresses, hats and parasols from the period. His classes also include a history of the Branford River and transportation in Branford. His use of excerpts from the New York Times about World War II is highly informative and interesting, particularly for adult audiences in assisted living facilities, the Branford Senior Center and for church groups. This is only a small portion of the facilitated learning activities he has provided for students and adults as a volunteer.
Al Russell has been called upon to deliver sermons at the First Congregational Church in Branford on many occasions. He has written inspirational articles for publication and has conducted summer studies programs for children in the Church of Ch1ist and Sunday school instruction for First Congregational Church children.
Al was a major player in Branford's 3501h celebration. He is a member of the Board of the Academy on the Green, The Friends of the Blackstone Library, the Branford Historical Society, the Branford Food Pantry and a Branford Point Park Commissioner.
In every sense of the term, Al Russell is an inspirational educator and a caring friend for the people of Branford.
