Arthur Lombard
Art Lombard began his public education experience as a student in the Guilford Public Schools from first through ninth grade. He transferred to Loomis Chaffee for grades ten through twelve where he graduated in the top five of his class. Art went on to Yale University, graduating with honors in 1954 with a degree in History. During his time at Yale, Art was very active in organizing, coaching and playing numerous intramural sports and activities.
Art began his business career in 1954 when he went to work for the Southern New England Telephone Company. During his five years with SNET, Art married Denise and they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In 1959 Art joined the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company as an estate and financial planner and over the next thirty years was often number one in the country for commissions for group insurance, group pension, accident and health insurance. During this same period Art purchased the Knowles-Lombard Co., which was primarily a fuel oil company that he sold in 1988.
Art and Denise have lived in Branford since 1963. They raised their children here and Art has been involved in school and community activities in Branford for over forty years. He has served as president of the Brushy Plains (Murphy} PTA, been on the PTA Council, Drug Committee, RTM, held numerous positions in the Linden Shores Homeowners Association and coached Buddy League Baseball for ten years. Today Art and Denise have five grandchildren: Jackie, Michael, Sarah, Robert and Morgan.
It is his long involvement on the Branford Board of Education where Art has made his most significant contributions to education in Branford. Art has always been a leader on the Board but it has been his non-partisan approach that made him stand out. First elected to the Board in 1973, he was a voice of reason at a time when it was most needed. He served as secretary, acting chairman and chairman of the Negotiating Committee at a time before binding arbitration, when the town and the teachers were often at odds. Art left the Board in 1976 but returned in 1994, when once again a peacemaker was needed on the Board. Art worked hard over the next seven years to bring harmony to a Board that was sharply divided. Art left the Board in 2001 but was elected again in 2003 and continues to serve on the Board today. During his three tenures on the Board, Art has always stood out as someone who wanted all the facts and then voted according to the best interest of the school system.
Tonight we recognize Arthur Lombard for his life-long contribution to Education in Branford.
