Barbara Reimers
The name Barbara Reimers has been synonymous with community, commitment and public education. The Town of Branford, the county of New Haven and the State of Connecticut have been the principle beneficiaries of her talents as school board member, legislator and public advocate.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on March 20, 1919, Barbara went on to graduate from Vassar College in 1939 after serving as president of her class. Her educational career began the same year in Peekskill, New York, where she taught mathematics at St. Mary's School. She received a LLB from LaSalle Extension University.
After moving to Connecticut, Barbara began her life of public service by joining the education staff at the Connecticut General Assembly from 1967- 1975. She served the 12th district from 1977-79 as a State Senator and was a ranking member of the Education, Human Services and Labor and Industrial Relations Committees. She was a member of the Commission to Re-codify Education Laws.
She blended both worlds by being elected to the Branford Board of Education for almost twenty years and served as Chairman from 1961-65 and again in 67-69. She was elected President of the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education in 1965. In 1973 she was elected to the ultimate position of President of the National School Boards Association at its convention in Los Angeles, California.
She holds honorary memberships in Delta Kappa Gamma and the Connecticut Association of School Administrators. Barbara has contributed to several prestigious organizations, associations, steering committees and task forces as a consultant, advisor and member. Some of these include the American Arbitration Association Community Disputes Panel, the National Committee for the Support of Public Schools, the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools, the Branford Charter Revision Commission, the Branford School Building Committee, the American Association of School Administrators and the U.S. Defense Department Advisory Committee on Women in the Services. She is a Life Member of CABE and NSEA. She has served on the board of trustees for Wightwood School, The Country School in Madison and Day Prospect Hill School, as well as the Board of Directors for the Branford Visiting Nurse Association.
Barbara lives in Branford with her husband, Fredrick, a retired textiles executive. Her family includes her three daughters Terry, Jean and Clare and five grandsons Andrew, Mark, Keith, Adam and Brian.
