David W. Maloney
David W. Maloney was born to be an educator and a leader. In both areas he has known great success and is widely recognized for his achievements.
A product of the Branford Schools who was an outstanding student, athlete and leader, Dave attended The University of Vermont where he again excelled in the classroom, on athletic fields and as a leader. Following graduation in 1972, Dave returned to Branford to teach science at the Branford Intermediate School, now the Walsh Intermediate School. It was the start of initiating innovative learning opportunities for students by Dave that has marked his long career as a teacher, coach and administrator.
In 1983, Dave transferred to Branford High School to teach biology. He continued his labor of love, coaching,-which he began at the Intermediate School, where he developed the schools basket ball program and became the "Lady Hornets" head coach. His coaching record is one of high achievement and earned him an impressive array of awards and recognitions, including two state championships and nationally ranked girls basketball teams.
Dave began his twelve-year tenure as Summer School Director in 1977, initiating an era of innovative curriculum advancements. In 1989, Dave became Assistant Principal at BHS and continued in this position before retiring in 2007, after establishing scores of programs that featured both cognitive and affective learning opportunities for students.
Currently, Dave is Assistant Executive Director of the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS), where his duties include oversight of all student activities (K-12) and management of eight CIAC sports committees.
Innovation and humanistic leadership are two terms that capture the essence of his professional work. Of the hundred or more notable contributions he has made, a few that have had the greatest impact are developing a Community Service Learning Graduation Requirement that is a model program for Connecticut, which received The Governor's Award for Youth Action (1990); training more than forty state school districts in the Anti-Defamation Leagues' "A World of Difference Program"; organized cultural diversity workshops for town employees, including teachers and support staff ; provided over two thousand parents with instruction in "Promising Practices for Parenting". He has con ducted workshops in Classroom Management, Diversity Learning Styles, Performance Assessment, Thinking Skills and Conflict Resolution across Connecticut and developed the Cultural Diversity Club, which has earned state and national recognition. In addition, Dave created the Branford Coalition for Children, Youth and Families that centered on substance abuse in Branford.
Dave has earned respect and admiration for his work. Among the countless recognitions he has received are: "The Tapestry Award", for promoting diversity in the workplace and schools (1999); the CAS Citation of Honor (2002); CAS Assistant Principal of the Year (1998); The Anti-Defamation League's "Distinguished Educator Award", "Operation Respect", a national award for efforts to reduce bullying and formal recognition of Dave's "Student Diversity Training Program" by The Southern Connecticut Conference (1997) and the Connecticut Association of Multicultural Educators (2000).

Dave and his wife Debbie are the proud parents of Derek and Jeff. He is the second member of his family to be inducted into Branford's Education Hall of Fame, joining his mother, the late Marion Maloney, who was inducted in 1999.
