Dr. Herbert Goldenring

Dr. Herbert Goldenring was a gifted pediatrician who touched the lives of thousands of his patients and their parents. When he established his pediatric practice in Branford in 1954, he was the first medical specialist in the town. For three and a half decades, Dr. Goldenring served as the major source for parenting education for the citizens of Branford.
When he retired from private practice in 1990, he became Director of Well-Baby Nurseries at Yale New Haven Hospital. In addition, he lectured the resident pediatric staff and he was an Associate Clinical Professor at the Yale School of Medicine. To Branford parents he was the source of trusted care for their children and safe, practical advice about nurturing the growth of children. He was the first pediatrician in the area to feature a well-child waiting room as well as a sick child waiting room. His demeanor was a reassuring combination of cutting edge medical knowledge and practical application.
Dr. Goldenring is remembered by those whom he touched as a physician with incomparable judgment and compassion and a true love for all children. His patients and their parents had the benefit of his wisdom in caring for children, both well and ill. He instilled a feeling of confidence in his expertise as a teacher on how to raise a child.
"Mom this will pass, don't make food an issue" and "Dad, this should not be a concern. I want you to read this," were reassuring words he often offered to parents who worried unnecessarily about their child. However, he would express his concern about a child with words like, "Your child is stable, but I'm concerned about this symptom. I think I know what is causing it but I want to do some research and thinking before I'm certain."
Dr. Goldenring received a B.S. degree at the Columbia University School of Pharmacy and then earned an M D. degree at New York University School of Medicine. He trained in pediatrics, including a residency in contagion at Willard Parker Hospital in New York City.
His second tour of duty in the United States Army was as a 1st Lieutenant in the Medical Corp in Korea for which he was awarded a bronze star. Dr. Goldenring was a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a member of The Connecticut State Medical Society, The New Haven County Medical Society and The America n College of Allergy and Immunology.
Dr. Goldenring was honored by the Branford Community Council as Volunteer of the year in 1984 and was an Attending Physician at the Branford Well-Baby Clinic from 1954 to 1989. He was an Attending Physician at Yale-New Haven Hospital and at the Hospital of St. Raphael.
Dr. Goldenring is survived by his wife of 55 years. Gloria, three children, Jane Goldenring, Dr. John Goldenring and Dr. James Goldenring and three grandchildren: Jessica, Kate and Dane.
