Joseph P. Martin

Joseph P. Martin, Jr., was born Hartford, CT, to Irish immigrant parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Martin, who had three children, Elizabeth, Mary and Joseph.
Joe was educated in the Catholic School System in Hartford and graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science. He entered the workforce as a store manager with Stop & Shop Supermarket which sent him to Cornell University for a graduate degree in Food Management. After graduation, Joe managed various Stop and Shop stores along the Connecticut shoreline from West Haven to Greenwich.
In 1965, after deciding he wanted to do something different with his life, Joe returned to college to get a degree in Distributive & Marketing Education, as well as, in Business Education from Central Connecticut State University.
Joe started his education career at Branford High School in September of 1966 and was there for over thirty-one years. During that time, he established DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), a marketing program that became one of the finest DECA programs in Connecticut. You could always find Branford High School DECA students competing at the National DECA Conference.
Through his years at Branford High School, Joe was the freshman football coach, chairperson of the town wide curriculum committee and was president of the Branford Education Association. He also served on various New England Secondary School Evaluation Committees.
In 1972, Joe was the recipient of the first Outstanding DECA Teacher of the Year Award presented by the Connecticut Department of Vocational Education.
In 1973, he returned to college for a 6th Year degree in Administration and Supervision from Southern Connecticut State University. Joe’s educational career was not limited to Branford High School. He was also an adjunct marketing professor at the University of New Haven, Albertus Magnus College and Gateway Community College.
Outside of school, Joe put his business training and experience to use as the owner of the North Branford Dairy Queen and the Village Shoppe Antique & Gift Store in Branford.
Joe resides in North Branford, CT, with his wife of fifty-three years, Cecilia Casey Martin and they have six children: Elizabeth Martin Adzima, Joseph P. Martin III, Ellen Mary Martin Frye, Patrick D. Martin, Catherine Martin Brown and Amy Martin Sorensen and seventeen wonderful grandchildren.
