Mary Beth Delucia
Mary Beth DeLucia, daughter of Phil and Alba DeLise, is the oldest of five children. She grew up in a close and loving family that valued care of others and love of education. Until age twelve she attended Montowese School and it was there, in fifth grade, that she was inspired to be a teacher. Four feet, eight-inch-tall, Miss Maureen Leary was an energetic, challenging, compassionate educator. As a young, girl, Mary Beth could always be found reading, writing and playing school. After the influence of Miss Leary, Mary Beth never wavered from her choice.
In 1969, the DeLise Family moved to Branford where her dad was an educator at Branford High School. Mary Beth started in April at Branford Junior High and then continued onto 9th grade at Branford High School. There, she was elected to the Student Council and was a member of the French Club and the Yearbook Committee. In her junior year, she was elected to the National Honor Society and received the DAR Award. Mary Beth graduated in the top ten of her class.
Mary Beth graduated Magna Cum Laude from Wheaton College in Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a minor in Education in 1978. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Mary Beth earned a Master of Science in Learning Disabilities and a 6th Year degree in Administration from Southern Connecticut State College.
In September 1978, Mary Beth began her teaching career as a first grade teacher at the former Damascus School which is now Mary R. Tisko School. She also taught kindergarten at Brushy Plain School. At Tisko, Mary Beth was the transitional first grade teacher and also taught kindergarten and second grade. Presently she teaches first grade. Mary Beth tutored many Branford children and also taught homebound to BHS students. During Mary Beth’s thirty-eight years in the Branford School System, she motivates all her students to consistently try their best to reach their potential. She believes that all children can succeed and tries to instill that positive attitude with all her students.
Throughout her history in Branford, Mary Beth consistently served on district curriculum committees. For many years to the present, she is a cooperating teacher to a countless number of students embarking on a teaching career. Also, she was a mentor teacher to several newly hired Branford teachers. Mary Beth also often took advantage of many Professional Development opportunities after school, on weekends and during summers that were offered by the district. Mary Beth has been a BEA representative and also served as the organization’s treasurer. She has been supportive of all BEA charitable drives and a variety of town wide charities.
For twenty-eight years, Mary Beth has been married to her husband, Lou, who she met at SCSU. Lou also is an educator. He recently retired as an English teacher at Wilbur Cross High School. Lou continues to work as an adjunct professor at Gateway Community College. They are the proud parents of two daughters, Therese and Julie.
Mary Beth will be retiring in June. She reminisces about that 5th grade girl who knew she wanted to be a teacher. So many years later, she feels honored to be a part of such a noble profession.
