Peter C. Young

A Branford resident for more than thirty years, Peter C. Young graduated from New Britain High School and went on to Central Connecticut State College majoring in history with a minor in sociology. After graduating in 1967, he became coordinator for Project DISCUSS in Middletown while pursuing a master's degree in educational administration at the University of Hartford, which he completed in 1972, followed by a sixth-year degree in educational administration in 1976. In 1970 Peter became executive director of Area Cooperative Educational Services (ACES), a position he has held ever since. As superintendent to an educational association that serves twenty-six school districts, Peter Young has had a major impact on the lives of many thousands of children. Directing the enormous growth in services to these districts, including the Branford Public Schools, Peter has had a direct hand in providing special education services for children whose local districts may have been unable to fund such services. His innovative and creative leadership has benefited not only the children but also those who work with them. The High School for the Performing Arts, which has enriched the learning experiences of many Branford students, is just one of many programs that would not have been available to local students without Peter's vision and drive.
In the forefront of developing specialized services for school districts in professional development, technology, audio-visual library use, and curriculum development, Peter Young has truly led ACES. In the process he has contributed immeasurably to the growth of children and those who serve children's learning needs. His leadership role in providing alternative schools, inter-district programs, and magnet schools in New Haven County is recognized as being pivotal in the continuing improvement of educational opportunities for children in the area.
Peter Young's superior performance as Executive Director of ACES has been acknowledged throughout the state, including a recent lofty endorsement by Dr. Theodore Sergi, Connecticut Commissioner of Education. Young currently has the longest continuous tenure of any superintendent of schools in Connecticut.
Peter and his wife, Judith A. Young, owner of Yesterday's Threads in Branford are the parents of Elizabeth S. Young, a teacher at Hamden High School, and Kristin C. Young, Assistant Stage Manager of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre in New York City. Peter is Senior Trustee of First Baptist Church in Branford, where his love of teaching and his commitment to learning is again made manifest. His three decades of work with a Baptist summer learning camp in eastern Connecticut is a long-standing testimony to his commitment to the growth of the total child and provides clear evidence that, despite his administrative career, Peter is a teacher at heart-a fact that has driven his innovations and accomplishments throughout his professional life.
In addition, locally Peter has served as treasurer of the Branford Interfaith Housing Corporation (1989-91) and is a trustee of the Pine Orchard Nursery School.
Last December Peter received the Justin A. Prentice Award by the Association of Educational Services Agencies. This national award presented by the Association is the highest recognition of professional service and leadership for a regional education service director.
Few people have had a greater influence in improving learning opportunities for our children in the state, in New Haven County, and locally in Branford than Peter C. Young. He is an educator who worked outside the spotlight to bring about improved learning for all children. His vision, drive, and leadership have made him one of the greatest influences for improving learning in the last generation.
