Richard and Judith Milgram
Richard Milgram strikes the right chord every day as owner of the Shoreline School of Art and Music.
He and his wife Judith have taught art and music while fostering the creativity of Branford's best for more than 30 years.
Richard is a graduate of the Berklee School of Music and says that his love for the art started early and has always remained strong. Richard's forte is piano, but he is a master of most instruments and the school teaches vocal and composition as well as art.
"We are dedicated and passionate about it," says Richard. 'We run into students all the time at the supermarket or out and about and when they thank me or Judith for helping them find the joy in music or art, that's the satisfaction in what I do."
Richard says that despite the old adage that those who can't do teach, it takes a special talent to ignite someone's artistic passions and allow him or her to express those feelings through art and music.
"Our-students encompass the whole range, from four years old to senior citizens. We have young children and people in their 80s," says Richard. "The secret to teaching is knowing what the student wants and needs. After years of experience, I think we can recognize that and help break through and find and light that fire."
While Richard tends to the music students, Judith handles the art side of the student body. The school hosts frequent exhibitions of the student work, both at the studio and at local businesses.
The couple says that there isn't much difference between teaching music and teaching art; it's all about the individual student. Richard says that his love for music spans all generations and styles – it has to if he wants to keep up with his students.
For Richard and Judith, being a part of that process is what has driven them for 30 years. Richard points to studies that show that when the artistic talents of a person are unlocked, so are other areas of life including problem solving and alternate modes of thinking.
“To play a part in that, small or large, to have played a part in their accomplishment and establishing their identity, gives us a great feeling of success and hopefully for them as well,” says Richard.
