Robert G. Hale

Bob Hale has spent his entire life as a student, professional educator and supporter of public education. As a student his first diploma was obtained from Valley Regional High School in Deep River in 1952. Four years later he earned a B.S. degree from Teachers College of Connecticut. He later went on to earn a M.S. from Central Connecticut and a CAS in Educational Administration from Syracuse University.
Bob began his professional career over fifty years ago in 1956 as an Industrial Arts teacher in Manchester, Connecticut. In 1956 he came to Branford in the same capacity. While teaching Industrial Arts Bob became interested in the relatively new area of Educational media and in 1962, Bob was appointed Coordinator of Educational Media for the Branford schools. ln 1969 he became Director of ESEA and it was during this period that Bob designed and planned the multimedia that would be an important part of the state of the art Branford Intermediate School (Walsh Intermediate School). The entire school was to be built around a media center that Bob played a huge role in designing and equipping. Thirty-five years later, the fact that the media center is still the hub of the school, is a tribute to the plan that Bob implemented.
From 1971 to 1980, Bob served as director of Instructional Media for the Branford Schools. In 1980 he left Branford to join the Connecticut State Department of Education where he was the Coordinator of the Learning Resource and Technology Unit, a position he held with distinction for the next ten years. In 1990 he was appointed Assistant Director of Curriculum and Professional Development, a position he held until his retirement in 1992. Since 1992, Bob has been the founder and principal consultant to his own business, R.G. Hale Consulting.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Bob has an almost endless list of educational organizations that he has devoted his free time to. He has served on the board, been an officer or advisor to a number of Library Associations, Cable Television Groups, School Administrators, School Boards both in Connecticut and on the national level. He has had numerous articles published and has lectured as far away as China. He has been honored by at least ten organizations, both in and out of Connecticut.
He has been especially active in Madison where he has been a long-time member of the Madison Board of Education, including his present position as chairman. In addition, he has served as President of the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education and is active in the National Association of Boards of Education.
Bob is married to Pauline Schweizer Hale and they have three adult children, Robert Jr., Kathleen Hale Tobin and David Hale. Bob and Pauline are the proud grandparents to Christopher Hale, Rebekah Hale, Thomas James Tobin, Carolyn Tobin and William Robert Tobin.
Bob's contribution to education in Branford and beyond makes him a most worthy inductee into the Branford Education Hall of Fame.
