Roy E. Ogren

Roy Ogren was born in New Haven and when his family moved to Branford, he was entering the 4th grade and attended the Short Beach School. He attended Branford Hills, Eades Street and then Branford High School.
He graduated magnum cum laude from Oberlin College with highest honors in English in 1967. In 1968 he received his M.A. in English at the University of Chicago. He served in the army from 1968-1971 as a translator and interpreter of German. In 1972 Roy was hired as an English teacher at Branford High School. He taught every grade level and every course from Remedial English to Honors and Advanced Placement classes. During that period of time, Branford had a large number of electives in every subject area that were tremendously popular with students and Roy taught such electives as "Literature of the (Wild) West, "Surrealism", "Man vs. Destiny" and "Youth in Conflict".
Roy returned to school and in 1977 received his 6th year degree in Administration and Supervision from Fairfield University. From 1984 through 2002, Roy took courses at the University of Connecticut, Wesleyan University and Southern Connecticut State University, in subjects as diverse as Curriculum Development, Issues in Special Education, Administration and Dramatic Writing.
Roy served as Chairman of the English department from 1973 to 1986 and again from 1999 to 2003. He was also advisor to the Branford High School literary magazine, which was recognized for its high quality in 1984, 1987 and 1990 by the National Council of Teachers of English.
Roy became a respected member of the faculty at Branford High School by both students and colleagues alike. Colleagues reported that when they served on committees, everyone looked to Roy for the best way to write exactly what they wanted to say without ambiguity or wordiness. In addition, Roy was often the person in meetings who would cut to the heart of the subject. His students said he taught them not just the subject but to think. They requested his classes in large numbers and were often disappointed when they were closed and would try again the next year.
Roy married Maria Milano in 1977 and they have two children, Cassie and Reid. Roy, who is semi-retired, continues to teach AP courses at the high school.
