Terry K. Ahern
Terry Ahern was born in New Haven and raised in Branford in a very loving Irish family. She is the 4th of five children born to the late Vincent and Theresa Murphy Ahern. Her siblings Vincent, Mary Pat, and Joanne live in Virginia, California, Florida and Connecticut respectively. Her son, Joseph (Jack) Ahern, daughter-in-law, Megan Casey Ahern and granddaughter Eowyn, live in San Jose, California. Jack is the Senior Game Designer at GSN, Game Show Network, in San Francisco and Megan is the founder and CEO of Pack in Los Gatos.
Terry graduated from Branford High School and then earned her Bachelor of Science in His- tory and Master of Science in Reading degrees at SCSU, Southern Connecticut State University and an additional Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Wesleyan University.
Terry was hired to teach social studies at Branford High School. In her career, she taught ten different courses, including Ancient and Medieval Civilizations, American Character, United States and World: U.S. Foreign Policy and five Honors Level courses including, Junior Humanities, Worldviews Wisdom and Religion and 20th Century Humanities. She concentrated every day on challenging and empowering students to further develop their abilities and talents in the areas of research, writing, speaking and creating. Outside of the classroom, Terry took students on eleven trips to Europe including trips to England, France, Germany, Greece, the Aegean Islands, Liechtenstein, and Turkey. In each country, they explored its history, art and culture.
Terry has received other recognition for her work. She was chosen as the Keynote Speaker for Branford’s Graduation Ceremony and the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony; she was nominated as the Branford Teacher of the Year in 2010 and received the Quinnipiac University Sigma Xi Chapter Outstanding High School Teacher Award in 1995.
Terry retired in 2012 and now enjoys spending time with her family and, of course, traveling. She also volunteers in Manhattan aboard the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.
Terry Ahern taught for over 30 years at Branford High School. She was a highly respected teacher by both her students and colleagues. She took great pride in seeing her students come to further appreciate their abilities, increasingly value hard work and take pride in their accomplishments.
