Terry Tammaro

Terry Tammaro grew up in New Haven and Hamden where she attended public schools. She graduated from Hamden High School in 1958. She always loved school, which must have impacted her career choice. She attended Southern Connecticut State College, graduating in 1962 with a BS degree in Early Childhood Education. Terry earned her Master of Science in Elementary Education from SCSU in 1972.
Terry lives with her husband of forty-seven years, Bart; in Branford. He has been a support to her career throughout these teaching years, especially in the technology explosion! He coached Terry and her staff as they struggled with the very first computers in the classroom.
Terry has taught kindergarten through third grade in Branford, many of those years at Branford Hills School. She served as Individually Guided Education Unit Leader (IGE) when the program was piloted, mentoring her staff with confidence and superior leadership. When the district instituted Teacher/Administrator style of supervision, Terry took on that role as well.
During her thirty-seven consecutive years of service to Branford's children, Terry provided common sense leadership, modeled truly good citizenship, mentored student teachers and new staff. She won the respect and affection of colleagues, parents and students for her consistently high standards.
Terry currently serves Branford students as a paraprofessional literacy instructor at John B. Sliney School. As always, she is a role model for staff and students alike. Her love of literature is shared daily with beginning readers, encouraging their growth and intellectual development.
When the Branford Education Association (BEA) teamed with SARAH for a fund-raising event they needed volunteers. Terry, always an advocate for our "special'' students, became the co-chair. This community service commitment was hers from the very start until the end of the program. She was awarded the CEA's ABCD Award for her dedication to Hop-Skip-Jump for SARAH.
Terry is a lifetime member of the professional organizations CEA and NEA. She is a supporter and participant for Relay for Life. An avid reader, an advocate for children and a cancer survivor...many descriptors can be assigned to this inspiring teacher. However, since her 1999 retirement, Terry has enjoyed spending time with family. Her great-nieces and great-nephews share her books and games! She is a UCONN Huskies basketball fan. Terry serves on her condominium Board of Directors, and in the summer, sits by the pool with her neighbors.
Terry Tammaro has been an inspiration to many. She has been a friend to all. She is an educator who never tires of lending a hand or giving "a leg up". Branford has been blessed.
